Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.

“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
